The naval war on the Great Lakes determined control of vital supply routes and shaped the outcome of the War of 1812 in the Anglo-American borderlands. On 19 August 1812, USS Constitution defeated HMS Guerriere in a single-ship action approximately 400 miles southeast of Halifax, establishing the American frigate’s reputation and earning it the nickname ‘Old Ironsides.’

The Battle of Villéré’s Plantation (December 23–24, 1814) was a night engagement between American forces under Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson and a British brigade that had occupied the Villeré plantation near New Orleans. Jackson’s attack surprised the British, delayed their advance, and gave the Americans time to fortify the approach to the city.

In July 1812, American Brigadier General William Hull led an invasion of Upper Canada from Detroit, crossing the Detroit River and occupying Sandwich. The campaign ended in disaster with Hull’s surrender of Fort Detroit to British Major General Isaac Brock on August 16, 1812, a major early setback for the United States.
