After the War of 1812, Great Britain abandoned its military and diplomatic support for Indigenous confederacies in North America, leaving Native nations to face American expansion without a powerful ally. The Treaty of Ghent and shifting British priorities ended the Anglo-Indian alliance that had shaped the northern frontier during the conflict.
USS Chesapeake was captured by HMS Shannon off Boston on 1 June 1813 and carried into Halifax, Nova Scotia. There she was repaired and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Chesapeake, serving until 1819, when she was sold and broken up at Portsmouth, England. Her surviving timbers were reused in the construction of Chesapeake Mill at Wickham, Hampshire.

The American naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 gave the United States control of the lake, severed British supply lines, and forced the retreat that led to the Battle of the Thames and the death of Tecumseh. This shifted the strategic initiative in the Northwest and altered the course of the War of 1812.
The War of 1812, though often overlooked, is important today because it solidified American independence, shaped Canadian national identity, weakened Indigenous power east of the Mississippi, and set the stage for westward expansion and the Civil War. Following the War of 1812, the United States and Great Britain agreed to limit naval forces on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain through the Rush-Bagot Agreement of 1817, a landmark arms control measure that helped secure a peaceful border.
