Aftermath

The Bicentennial Commemorations of the War of 1812 were a series of events in Canada and the United States from 2012 to 2015 marking the war’s 200th anniversary. They included national programs, military celebrations, and local initiatives that shaped public memory of the conflict.

The Era of Good Feelings (roughly 1815–1825) was a period of American national unity and one-party dominance that emerged directly from the aftermath of the War of 1812. The War of 1812 is often seen as a draw between Britain and the United States, but for Indigenous peoples it was an unmitigated disaster. After the War of 1812, the United States and British North America (later Canada) negotiated a series of treaties and commissions that settled boundary disputes and demilitarized the Great Lakes, transforming a contested frontier into the world’s longest undefended border.

The aftermath of the War of 1812, following the Treaty of Ghent in early 1815, reshaped national identities in the United States, Canada, and Britain, while devastating Indigenous nations and altering the course of American expansion and politics.

War of 1812 veteran land grants were a system of free public lands offered by the United States to encourage enlistment and compensate regular soldiers. Authorized by acts of 1811–1814, these grants distributed millions of acres in Michigan, Illinois, Arkansas, and Missouri, shaping western settlement and federal land policy.

Canadians have remembered the War of 1812 through a shifting lens of heroes, national identity, and debates over who won. From early efforts to counter American narratives to modern bicentennial celebrations, the war’s memory has been used to forge Canadian nationalism and to contest its meaning.
